Default Early vs. Late

Have a 73 XLH and am looking for some parts to finish it out. In the parts boook there have been references to an EARLY 73 and LATE 73. How do I know what version I have so I can be sure the parts I order will be the correct ones? Thanks for any replies..

The only definate way to figure it out is to call the factory and give them your VIN and they can tell you when it was made. If I remember right the early 73 models could only be bored out 30 over. The late 73 models you could go 60. Check the casting number on the cylinders also.

Tell us what 'parts' the parts book refers to. That may bring a better answer for you.
I am not aware of any 'early-late' exceptions other than the 1971 and the 1974 models.
There early and late clutch retainers on a 1971. No big deal because it was simply a different shaped metal strap.

There was an early-late change on a 1974 (clutch again) and this was the addition the clutch spacers. A important difference, unlike the 1971 change.

Maybe the name of your parts will tell us what to search for........ pg

I just finished rebuilding a 73 from top to bottom and the only difference I found was the cylinder bore as mentioned earlier in the post. Good luck

As you wrote this, it came up to my mind, issue might be same as 1972: cylinder head bolt pattern and cylinder base bolt pattern are "mixed" from 900 and 1000 engines.
So 1972-E73 have different caskets and cylinders ( just a guess ).
