The other day i had the ironhead out and it was running fine. Stop for a awhile and then started it up and was on my way then it died. I tried to start it and it turned over and over but wouldnt fire. I got it home and put charger on it. Checked for spark first and had that so checked gas flow and have that. So i tried to start it and it fired up but runs rough, backfires some and pops. It seems to me that it really only wanted to run while on charger? Any ideas?
Fully charge the battery then have it load tested. It may read good voltage but drop below 10.5 as soon as you hit the start button. Then it will not run the ignition system. You can load test it yourself:
1. fully charge battery
2. remove spark plug wires so engine will not fire [but leave plugs installed]
3. if you have electronic ignition install another set of plugs in the wires and ground them on the cooling fins [to avoid wrecking the EI]
4. attach voltmeter to battery terminals
5. watch the voltmeter while you crank the engine for 10 seconds
If the meter goes below 10.5 volts during the 10 seconds the battery is toast - replace it.
How much gas in the tank? Did you run it almost dry then fill recently? This would stir up the crud on the bottom of the tank. Is the fuel filter clear? [in the tank, with the petcock]. Another thing is if the vent in the tank or tank cap is not working.
