From the 79 to 85 parts book, the part numbers for 79 to early 85 are front 16673-73D and rear 16674-73D. The 73D indicates that any from about 1973 are the same.

The 73D probably means they begin with 1973. However, sometimes the number at the end of the part number indicates the design year not the first year used. Someone else may know for sure.

1972 heads might fit but cylinders are different... to be sure 73 and newer OEM#16673-73 and 16674-73 . If I heard correctly, D= hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel 79 ???
I can't confirm this from my "resources"...

The "D" suffix means it is the 4th modification of the part that was introduced in the 73 year. It supercedes -73, 73A, -73B, etc. Any of the -73 numbers will work but the latest is always the safest. Sometimes the changes are cosmetic, or to make manufacturing easier or it may be a real improvement like no lead valve seats.

There is cross-reference mat'l available that you could check your VIN against. However, when it comes to internals it is just best to open and see. If it is valve guides you are looking at you want to check the style and diameter to be sure you are ordering/replacing with the same.
