I cranked my bike yesterday to let it run a while ,realy just missed hearing it run.just to cold to ride and today I noticed it had leaked about a half a gallon of gas out the tube.I dont know much about carbs and thought I would ask if any one might know what this from.thanks for all responses... carb is S&S supper e shorty
you probaly left the fuel valve on when the bike was parked,.. if it keeps leaking or leaks when it is running, you need a new needle valve and seat,or mabye a float in the carb, s&s's are simple to take apart and put togeather, the parts are cheap, like $20
Yup,fuel was left on.It doesn't take much to hold the needle off the seat.S&S makes an excellent carb, the last forever. You might want to consider a small inline fuel filter.
Did it leak all of the gas down to the reserve? If not then the problem fixed itself, although possibly temporarily. Two things that cause fuel overflow from the carb:
[1] a dried out needle tip - if the needle tip is a rubber like compound like on the Keihin carbs and if the carb sits empty of fuel the tip will dry out and not seal. Once it gets wet again it is fixed
[2] grit in the carb - a very small piece of crud can get stuck at the needle valve [fuel inlet] and prevent the needle from sealing. Fuel passing thru can dislodge the crud and it is fixed until that piece moves back to the needle again
IMO you should not install an in-line fuel filter unless the fuel tank is rusty inside, and you remove the one attached to the petcock inside of the fuel tank. Running two fuel filters can slow the flow of fuel and cause performance problems. If you do install such a filter do not use an automotive filter - these are designed to be used by vehicles with a fuel pump.
