75 gearcase
Dynaman the cams CAN be removed without removing the pushrod's and tappets. I sold a 1975 Sportster to one of my friends and he removed the cam cover and cams with everything still adjusted. You can cause damage to your bushings and cams by not removing the tension on them before you remove them but then again I'm just a young guy with no where near the experience you have so what do I know right.
Yes I can read and I have read all of the post and don't see one thing you have posted that was of any use to the original issue. Once again you want to chime in with your usual bs that is of no help to anyone. If all your going to do is start problems and talk down to people find another place to go and let the people who actually want to learn from others mistakes alone.
From the sounds of it you pilled the lifters out thru the cam case. make sure they're back in before installing the cams, or you'll have to pull lifter blocks to re-install. hold them up an tie wire them so they don't fall out.
I just posted a question for the first time in a month. I read these threads all the time to learn. There has been some responses in these threads a bit different than I read before. These responses have a certain character/style. To that I have the following comment.
Those who profess to be omnicient, by passing to others their proclaimed irrefutable knowledge, while displaying an arogant and condescending attitude with their prose, are not attempting to instruct, but rather are simply dabbling in self glorification.
I am a school teacher (middle school). This forum has been for me a positive learning experience due to posting from men like PG and Ironmick.
Sorry about the fancy language, must look like I'm showing off. When these posts show up I will just ignore a show off.

As far as the cams being out, I have a story. In the 70's I had a couple of XLCH's 1971 and a 1969. My first was the 71. I tried to take the covers off to get them chromed without any real knowleddge of how it worked. When I pulled the cover off one of the cams stayed in the cover. I took the rest out (no HD forum in the 70's
). I had to get someone to put it together. I had to spend my chrome money. I messed up taking a couple other things apart. You live and learn.
