Witch of your scoots is this on? Although both should fire up fast, maybe its time to fine tunem a bit?
As I recall,You are using a VM38 Mikuni, and electronic ignition..should fire up right fast,3/4 revolutions.

Actually this is the bike with the HSR42 Mikuni and the Crane cams hi-4. I've never tuned a bike before so I'm sorta stuck, plus I'm pretty sure that carb is too big for this bike, but it came with it so I guess im keeping it.
Well I'm not familiar with that carb,sorry..Its easy to set Your timing, put in new plugs and such, adj Your pushrods..there are stickys on this and utube videos. With Your Hi4 and everything set right it should fire right off.Save Your battery's and starters..
Good move using the warranty on that battery - should try to think if you have one before replacing any component you've already replaced in the past. I keep all my warranty receipts in a drawer in my toolbox so I can't lose 'em.
It might be worth your while to test your generator, too - make sure it's putting out the correct amount of voltage. I don't know what year / generator type / etc. you're toting, so I can't confidently read off any tests to you. But it looks like there are tests for ohm output, checking for shorts by disconnecting one lead from the volt regulator, checking for voltage at the armiture lead with the generator disconnected from the regulator, etc.
I suppose it's possible your generator isn't polarized, too, for some odd reason - couldn't hurt to re-polarize before running the tests, I would say.
first thing is to see if your system is charging. start it and put a volt meter on the battery, you should at least get 13 volts, if not then that explains your problem, no charging.
Why batterys don't last long
1. Shaking, batterys don't like shaking. Battery should have flexible rubbermounting.
2. Overcharging, battery dries and can't keep charge.
3. Heat, excessive head dries battery and twist cells -> short circuit
4. Low temperature (below freezing) with low charge, freezes and brakes.
I could say that ironhead, shakes ...quite much compared to other bikes.
Also cheap battery's that are meat for lawnmowers are not best for ironhead, battery's that are meant for motorcycles have better support for cells inside of battery.
