My 82 ironhead is misting oil on throttle from the generator right on to the front push rod tube. Anybody have any idea why and what I should look for before I attempt to rectify this myself?
How long have you been running it? This a new problem? Recently worked on the generator at all?
If my memory doesn't fail me, the generator has a gasket and a press fit bearing meant to keep the oil where it needs to be. Nice thing is, generator isn't very rough at all to remove and inspect.
Just a thought - is there an oil breather tube in your case near the generator? And if there is, naturally, it has a bit of tubing attached to it (that probably runs up to your carb, passed the air cleaner), correct?
yes there is a tube, but on further inspection it is not connected to anything. I was assuming that it was a gasket or something of that nature, just thought I'd see if anyone else had the same problem. Thanks for the advice guys.
oil mist is normal from the tube, but not anywhere else..could be the genny/case gasket or the push rod tube corks/o rings..maybe the cylinder base gasket..clean well and watch it close see if You can tell by looking.
if you seal up a pre evo, iron,shovel,pan.. it wont run rite.. be proud of your real harley or trade it for a newer one..i kept my 72, and bought a new bagger.. best of both worlds..
And most important..... When you replace the generator and connect the wiring back, don't forget (or fail to) 'flash the fields' before you start it up.
That may save you a voltage regulator.
(Hey, I am guessing you have to flash the field on a 1982. Maybe not? Comments are welcome on these 'newer' models.)

Same 10 amp gen from 65 to 81; 82 to E84 is a 13 amp gen; L84-on is alternator.
I do not know of any replacements for the 13 amp gen, and most parts are not interchangeable between the two. So if necessary you just use the 10 amp version.
