You are proceeding in a correct manner......eliminate one thing at a time, then move on to the next.
The VM 38 Mikuni is the best carb you could ever hope to hang on a Sportster.
Your CV at 40mm is a bit on the large size for your machine. The VM 38 will be a much better choice.
Be sure to get the 90° elbow on the throttle cable when you buy your VM 38.
This is needed to enable you to run the throttle cable under the gas tank. See what I am talking about here......
thanks piniongear,,my 34 has that but my tanks is a old frisco tank mounted high so that wont be to big of an issue wont get to do much more this week as ill be gone truckin,i haul livestock.and cucumbers are ready so i got to make pickles i know sounds dumb but we eat lots of them,,thanks again,,jc
mines got one on both sides it was made for an old Norton or bsa or something long time ago by my father in law im running it out the left side with a sediment bowl looks pretty good none like it around here,,thanks,.,.,jc
well now seems ive got more troubles,, once i get the dumb thing up to temp it cuts out on the back cylinder could be its running lean but i dont think so.
because with switch on power to the coil the back plug wire always shocks ya,, not a hard jolt like a plug firing but just shocks hard enough you dont like it. bad coil?its brand new i know that dosent mean anything though.
just seems fishy that once its heated up coil shocks all the time and back jug is not firing at all, what you guys think,,,thanks jc

I am fairly certain that the coil is not bad. These things rarely cause trouble.
More than likely there is an electrical leak in that plug wire causing the shocking, which is also the same thing as grounding.
That would explain the rear cylinder not firing. The charge is finding it's way to ground rather than firing the spark plug.
Change out the wires and see if that cures the missing.
