Im not sure on what a pop can shim is anyway. I have some electrical rubber splicing tape I used to wrap the manifold. Fidgured it would hold out a little better than teflon tape or plain electrical tape.

From a pop can cut a strip about 1/2" wide, long enough to wrap around the pipe; then install the clamp on the shim. This will make the clamp much more effective. Without the shim the clamp may completely close before it has fully tightened. With the shim the clamp will tighten fully without being completely closed.
