Default What to do now

I have an 80 roadster with a spun main bearing and maybe more. We are trying to decide what to do now. I have not looked into it a lot yet, but I know parts are hard to find. So right now I am looking at a new motor, rebulid, or sell and start over with another old Harley. Can anybody give me some advice on where to find a new motor or what I might be looking at if I go the rebuild route.

The bottom ends of these bikes are being rebuilt all the time. Finding parts is not a problem. I would just start dismantling it, following the factory service manual 99484-85 and the factory parts catalog 99451-85A.

Keep careful track of parts using lots of baggies. Take lots of pics. Come back to these forums with what you find.

You will need a good machine shop.Try to locate one that works on vintage engines regularly.

I would not even consider locating a replacement motor. There are no new ones available. Any used one will have to be completely rebuilt anyway. And depending on your location you may then have title issues with mismatched numbers.

IMO you should not consider having a shop do the rebuild. It is a lot of hours at $50 to $100 per hour. Do it yourself. You can do all of the dismantling; you can post pics and get good advice; you can bring the parts needing repair to a shop; you can put it back together yourself.

Do not follow any advice you get on this or any other forum right away. Always wait for at least a day or so. The poster may be giving their best but there may be better yet to come.

This includes my advice.

IronMick knows what he is writing, and if you follow FSM instructions you can do it.
