The shifter setup ...

There is a small shifter peg that you move with your foot; it is screwed into a shifter lever; the lever is attached to the shifter shaft which runs into the engine.

On some models there are splines in the lever and the shaft. I believe on 1974 there were no splines, it is just a friction fit with set screws to hold the parts together.

This part may have come loose. This is a common problem.

Post a close picture of the shift mechanism of your bike.

OK, now I understand better what you meant in your post (Broken Heart).
If your friend sat on the bike and pushed down on the shift lever most likely the problem is the pinch bolt is simply loose.

Look at the end of the round shifter shaft as you move the shift lever up and down.
Does the shaft rotate?
If not, then all you have to do is tighten up the pinch bolt.

Most of the time a Sportster sitting there will not shift into gear.
The reason being that the ears on the gears are not lined up with the recess slots on adjoining gears.
So, after you tighten the shift lever pinch bolt, sit on the bike and put pressure on the shift lever.
Now while doing that, rock the bike back and forth a bit and it will go into gear.
You do not need to pull in the clutch lever to do this.

Here is what I am talking about.
See where the pencil points to? This is the end of the shifter shaft. It is a steel shaft and almost impossible to break.
If this does not move when you raise and lower the shift lever, then the pinch bolt is loose. See following pics..........

In the picture above the pencil points to the pinch bolt (and nut) on the shift lever.
All you have to do is position the shift lever horizontal and then tighten the bolt and nut firmly.
This squeezes the slot in the lever together and grabs tight around the shaft.
