the kit--??? no one wants to spend more.Might as well spend less, get what you need and keep the rest. You never know when you might need the others.

The valves---Is your compression at 90? If you have the heads off you might as well replace or have a machine shop work them over.I dont think you should have to replace them unless they are really bad.You still had 90 compression ...personally i would think most likely you could just have them reworked but i would go with what the machinist tells you....not necasarily what a parts guy says but an actual machinist.
You dont want to give up now do you?Alot of people in life quit on the 99 yrd line.....you might as well finish it at least then you will stand a chance of getting youre money out of it--that is if youre doing the work yourself. If youre hiring someone to do it then you will never get your money out of it most likely.

edit-This is not impossible. One step at a time and do the best you can do at that moment. You will get there.------If you got to sell it well then you got to sell it...but youre in the middle of a breakdown and most likely you will sell because of frustration not because of ability or desire. If that is the case then later you will only be mad at yourself. In the end you got to do what you got to do and that is it.Good luck either way.

I buy the gaskets I need from the dealer. I don't buy one, I buy the whole package. I like to have an inventory of the parts I will need most frequently. Rocker, primary, clutch and gear case...I have lots.

It is more profitable for the dealer to sell you something. Also, they will feel they need to offer you the advice that will give you 'peace of mind' knowing you won't be back pissed next year because it failed on the road. Your manual has tolerance limits that you can check yourself.

don't get discouraged. We have all been there. The bike is new to you...it will need some work. Take your time and check it all out. The rewards are worth the effort.

Mine was a wreck. Came in boxes. Took me three years to find and assemble enough parts to make a bike that I could ride. That was over twenty years ago. Still have and ride the same bike.

+1 on the above two posts.

Take your cylinder heads and cylinders to a machine shop and get their opinion.
