To my knowledge this style of case for model years 72(?) +. But it has a '70 vin. Also the vin is stamped in the slightly of kilter style of '72(?) and later where previously the vin was in pretty much in a straight line under the front cyl.
Do you have just the crankcase or the whole engine?
If you have the whole engine the clutch should be a dry clutch for a 1970 engine.
1971 was still a 900cc, but was the first year of the wet clutch.

Not sure what you're asking. Are you wondering if you have '70 or post-'70 motor ? As you pointed out, the VIN reads 1970 vintage.
Also applicable to '71 (& later) motors were the "ignition cone" & the "texas notch rocker boxes". So if your motor has both of those..... and in the absence of other evidence..... I'd be leaning towards a '71 (or later) motor. Either that or you have a mixed bag assembled by a PO.
Never mind.... I see my post got to the party late.
