Default Frustrating Problem...interesting conclusion

I'm not sure if anyone has had this problem before, but it was totally, completely frustrating and was giving me hissy fits. When first kicked, the bike started easy, ran well and idled fine, but after only about 30 seconds, the back jug wouldn't fire. I went through the usual fixes.... new plugs, wires, cleaned the points and even a new coil. After replacing the points however, the bike wouldn't start and even backfired through the carb and sounded really awful. Pulled the point plate out and removed and checked the mech advance when I noticed the coil wire looked funky. Closer inspection showed the wire to the coil completely worn through and was shorting on the case causing me grief and misery. When replacing the points, I must have moved the coil wire that goes through the case just enough to make partial contact with the case itself. After changing the wire, I saw it had lots and lots of cracks in it and even part of the plastic coating crumbled in my hand. You gotta love old bikes, but my oh my, can they test ones patience!

Very clean looking bike! That does sound frustrating, but good job getting to the bottom of it. Even though my refurbishing my Dad's '78 has caused some frustration, it is incredibly rewarding at the same time. Just "take 5" if you start getting so mad you want to throw a tool.
