you don't need to take it anywhere. pop off the cap and touch your fingers to the top of the coil and spin it by hand...the experience might enlighten you.

that being said you can check the coil with an OHM meter. It should do better than 10000ohms across the secondary coil and 5 or so across the primary....varies with your equipt and condition of coil.

if your not enlightened by the Mag and the coil checks out then you are looking for a short to ground. It can happen at the key switch (if you have one), it can happen at the stud for the kill switch or at the points or any connecting wiring internally and externally of the Mag.

it is a simple system. get yourself an FSM and read up on it. anyone can repair a mag with a little common sense.

In the mean time follow this link:

http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/s...d.php?t=465866

scroll down to the Magneto section (in orange print) and start reading.

Re-reading your post it almost reads like you were expecting the work on the genny to fix the Mag issue....

They are not related...at all.

The Genny charges the battery/runs the electic on the bike. This would include the igntion on any other bike...BUT, not on MAG bikes.

The Maggy is an independant, self generated spark ignition system. Completely self sufficient. Most old Mag bikes don't even have batteries(mine included) and the motors continue to run long (as in you make it home and shut it down, run out of gas, get to buddies house etc etc) after the Genny quits and the lights go out.

The Mag has magnets on the rotor that generate a current as the rotor spins in the housing. The current is amplified by the coil and released to the plugs from the points. The Maggy must spin fast enough to create the current in the first place...this is where a strong battery is needed and a good starter. OR A KICKER.

understand?

don't give up on it too quickly.
you might as well learn all you can and do it yourself because no-one else really knows it either; they just take your money and run...
so, be patient, read the stickys I linked in the previous post, and do it yourself.

I do understand that spark has nothing to do with the genny, I was just wishfully thinking and hoping I suppose. I do know how a magneto works but maybe that can help someone else who is reading this so thank you for the explanation. My buddy is already bringing the mag along with all of his mag stuff he needs done to the guru on the other side of the state. He doesn't charge anything to us so I'll basically just end up tossing him $50 or so bucks for a recharged mag. I'm not giving up on the bike, I already have another 69xlch that I tore apart and rebuilt and had no issues troubleshooting any problems. The only difference is that bike was meant to be a project, this one I paid running price for and it dies out after buying it. So needless to say I'm a little disappointed there, although I did expect it to need a little bit of work.

I should be getting the mag back early next week I'd guess so I'll be updating ya'll then!

If it starts cold, the mag should start fine hot, unless there is a problem with the coil and/or condensor, which can fail when hot.

Going in another direction (and ignoring the comment "it only sparks every few seconds"), a lot of times hard hot start is caused by misadjusted pushrods.
