hd - Harley Davidson
1 - heavy weight motorcycle
cr - not in 79 to 85 FSM, indicates 1986 or later
h - engine displacement
2 - mid-year introduction
2 - check digit, factory use
e - model year, 1984
y - plant of manufacture (York)
258346 - sequential number
e - model year, 1984 This is where the error occurs as it is clearly not a 1984 Sportster. Everything in the pictures is a 1986 or later Evo Sportster.
What the title etc papers say is not relevant. What matters is clear, legal VINs on the motorcycle. The state/province motor vehicle department can fix the error.
We have been at this point a few times in the past with other mis-identified Sportsters. This whole discussion is absolutely, completely useless without a clear picture of the VINs, both on the frame and on the engine.
Please post a clear pic of each. To be clear enough to be useful you must use a tripod or equivalent, do not use a flash, use indirect flat lighting.
I think that we will find that the model year designation is not an "E" but it merely looks enough like an "E" to be misinterpreted as such. Look thru the year code chart in this link to find the most likely correct interpretation ...
