Default RE: oil??

Harley for years used the same oil in the gearbox as they used in the engine but that was with the dry clutch. After coming out with the wet clutch in the early 70's they used a "Sport Lube" in the tranny/front chain, I'm sure a 20x50 oil would work as well, there are a lot of aftermarket oils that will work as well as Harley oil. I personally wouldn't recommend a syntheticwith an Iron Head but I'm sure there will be peoplewho willdisagree with me.

There is a breather in your leftside crankcase that allows transfer of engine oil to primary/transmission case. Therefore, only use the same oil in the engine and primary/transmission.
The wet clutch first appeared in 1971. Before that the Sportster had a dry clutch. Same type of oil was used in both machines. Somewhere around 1977 this breather was removed and the trans got an addition of a vent hose, thus separating the engine from the trans.
But yours being a 1974, you need to keep the oil the same.
I recommend H-D Grade 75 oil in both places if you can find it at a dealer. This was a Harley marketed oil that was equivalent to a 60wt oil. Newer machines use lighter oil so it has disappeared in many places. I had a guy tell me he can get it up in Ohio. I cannot find it in Texas, so I run Castrol 70wt as a second choice.
If you live in a cold place you could run Castrol 50wt.

I would not run synthetic oil of any kind, and it cost far more than it's worth.
I would not run Pennsoil, Valvaline, Mobil etc, etc because of the additives.

You had another question regarding 'flashing the fields'.
This needs to be done when you have removed any wires from the generator, regulator or have removed the battery cables.
Here is what you have to do:
1) reconnect any and all wires you had disconnected.
2) Before starting the engine, momentarily touch a wire between the 'BAT' terminal and the 'GEN' terminal on the regulator. This surge of current will polarize the generator. Crank it up and have a good ride.......pg
p.s.......Failing to flash the fields can result in the polarity being reversed and this will cause the relay points to viabrate and bounce which burns up the points.

If you are referring to what type of oil to use,....the answer is yes. The same applies to a 1972 ironhead......pg
