Default DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 81 82 SPORT

whats the difference between an 81 and 82
seem like alot of parts are different.

I think the ignition system was more or less the same. The generator changed from 81 to 82 as far as I can tell. The wheel base increased slighty in 82. The rear fork changed slightly. Oil filter locating changed. Rear brake calipers, rear brake master cylinder, front master cylinder all seem to havechanged slightly. I don't think the carburetor changed. I don't think the clutch changed. I don't think the transmission changed. The wiring changed somewhat.
I'm just getting this info from my book. I have not worked on an 81 or 82 yet. But you seem to be right when you say that a lot changed.

Biggest change is the frame. The '82 has a completely different frame from the '81. The easiest way to pinpoint the differences is to get a factory parts manual - I think there's one that covers from 1979 to 1985. You can see what parts are common to both models, and which ones are different.

The compression dropped in '82 and Harley Davidson bought the company back from AMF the year before.
