Default bendix????

hi all,as i said before i bought a new carb for my 71 and its fine, but im trying to figure out whats wrong with the old one so i can sell it.the problem was that when it would i dle for a few miniutes it would start pouring gas out.i figure that it was just a stuck float,, but could it have been boiling gas in the bowl. anyhow, how do i know what it is is it a 42 or a 38 im gonna put in a kit. i might end up useing it my new carb has a dead spot right of idle. its a pain i cant seem to get it adjusted out it might need a bigger jet hmm??thanks, jared

jcarson...
What I recommend you do is to remove the main jet body from the carb. This is the large bronze bolt on the bottom of the float bowl.
The jet body unscrews and this frees the float bowl for removal.
Put the bowl aside and look on the main shaft of the jet body. Up towards the top there is a groove and in this groove sits a rubber O ring.
What condition is this O ring in? This O ring seals off the float chamber from the venturi area. If the O ring degrades it allows raw fuel to bypass the main jet passage (the center hole in the body) and dump directly into the venturi.
This will cause all kind of problems for you. If the O ring is not in perfect condition.....replace it with a new one.
You can get a new one at Lowe's. Just go to the plumbing dept and find the section where the O rings are located. You want a #5. These come as a pkg of 10 for about $1.29.........pg

Measure at the venturi end where the carb goes against the intake manifold.
A 38mm is what you should have on a Sportster. The 42mm is meant for the big twins. 38mm is going to be close to 1 1/2 inches.......pg
