i have a 76 xlh i have had it for 6 yrs.
top end was rebuilt. carby was changed , but the mixture screw was butcherd so i put the old crab back on (as it WAS running fine with it on ) its a zenith carb.
ok the problem is i set mixture screw so bike iddeled fine open the throttel and it surges. then when it is hot it is very temermentel to start .
some times i let it sit for 1/2 hour then it will fire..iam thinking pump probs...
so any advice would be help full..and it is elec.start only

If the carb ran fine before, you can expect it to run the same later. Sitting on a bench does not degrade the carb.
So you may want to take another look at how well the intake manifold is sealing at the 2 O-rings. If the engine is popping, this is the problem. Remove the carb and then remove and reinstall the manifold, making sure both O-rings do not shift when you tighten the clamps.
While you have the carb off.......drop the float bowl and check the float level. Be sure to check the O-ring that is located on the main jet body. This thing has caused me grief no end in the past on my Zenith (Bendix) carb. Photo of this is attached.
If you need a new O-ring, go to Lowe's and buy a pack of 10 in the plumbing dept. You want a #5 size. This O-ring will degrade over time and allow fuel to bypass the main jet by leaking directly into the inlet manifold. This item is the only thing (inside the carb) I can think of that will degrade while the carb sits there on the bench over time............pg

thanks for advice..you are right ,i thought carb would be fine also ..but surge as in open under load quickly it plays up open throttel slow it is ok
so i will check o ring and let u know how i go ...also will check float level;; its not popping so i dont think it is sucking air in

thanks for your help.
i found the problem , it was the mixtuer screw must of been dodigie
i replaced it and it is performing 100 percent like they should.
i replaced the o ring also ( for peace of mind)
thanks mate
Great! Glad to hear you have it humming. Yes, a bad needle sounds like the answer. Good that you replaced the O ring while you were there.
Should the bike ever start to run rich.....black puffy smoke out the pipes and spark plugs fouling at highway speed....then look for that O ring to be the cause.......pg
