42 EL Knucklehead
Its in good working order. Its been restored at some time, there are a mixture of repop or NOS and original parts on it. I will have to start by identifying these and then possibly replacing some of them with originals from meets and or other methods.
I guess this is why I bought the bike, I have a nice StreetGlide but its to reliable and I hardly get to turn a wrench on her in any meaningful way. This new bike, presents very well, it does have some chromed pieces which the purists tsk tsk me on (and that's ok, I may become a purist myself one of these days, grin).
I have ridden for years and never really had any interests in the oldies until lately, now I can't get enough.
I am struggling to figure where to start. I brought here home, onto a hoist and I am going over her inch by inch, I find I am sometimes just staring at different areas and taking it all in. I think I will start with diffident systems, such as the engine, then the fuel supply, for instance I see rust in the bottom of the tank, so maybe the tanks should come off and I should "coat" the insides. . . once I start rolling it will all just happen.
I actually jumped on the forum just now to see if there was a checklist of procedures or something, I even thought if I could find a "judging" checklist that perhaps that would be a great guide to look at different areas to inspect closely. For instance looking at the running lights, I believe my tail light is original, while my front fender light is highly likely to be re-pop, I asked myself if that bothers me, and I guess, I have to admit that it does, dam! So I think I shall start making a list of things I will watch for at the next meet and until then just concentrate on what I have and what to work on next... so off to the garage I am going and I think I will set the valves, never done that on this vintage bike, so this should be a hoot.
