"What do they do at 1000 miles that i couldn't do at home?" air tight documentation for warranty purposes..it's arguably THE most critical and important service..of course you can perform it yourself..but it's the CYA one to have them do imo

I don't see anything about warranty being void if you do your own service. How much do they charge to change the oil and check belts and bolts? If i find a problem at 1k miles, i'll take it in under the 2k factory warranty. I trust myself to check everything more than i trust them to do a pencil whip

good chance it'll be a non issue and you'll save yourself $300..it's just one of those services that being documented by a dealership on a brand new bike that could have consequences..a lot of times if there are issues/defects they will manifest themselves off the bat. a lot of people have the dealership perform the 1K's then DIY going forward. probably a very small percentage of people that DIY the 1K ever have it come back to bite them..just give it a very thorough service because that's the mileage things are going to stretch, loosen, etc. other thing is they may find something you missed and be covered, like possible TSB, or DT update....is an extra $300 worth peace of mind? to some yes, to some no

Yes, but only a oil change then do the full 1K at 1K.

My experience with breaking in H-D's is that at about 700 miles they are loosened up. I know this by monitoring mpg. It will gradually increase until about 700 miles then taper off. That is a good indicator that the friction of a tight new engine has dissipated.

Wow! Thanks, everyone, for all the great feedback!

If i had, say 850-900 miles on the bike, it might be a closer call, but at 300 miles, it seems like the consensus is to wait, so wait, I shall!

Thanks, again, fellas!

Wait till 1k and get the service done. It is paid for. It will cost you $50-60 to do it yourself, just in supplies, anyway.
If you do change your oil, and filter, replace it with non-synthetic then change them again at 1k. You don't want to be running synthetic oil during break in.

I don't believe in break-in BS.
If you ride a bike for 1 hour with average 3000RPM, pistons pass each cylinder wall 360 000 times. Do you really think it is not enough? I think 10000 revolutions is enough. After I put engine together I let it idle for a few minutes, that is it!

There is no such thing as break in oil. The oil in the bike from factory is the same stuff you buy.
There is no reason what so ever to do the 1000 mile at 300. Relax Spring in here you will have your 1000 miles before you know it.
The non sense about syn oil and break in is just that. So many come with SYN right from the factory now. And the non sense of changing it at 500 miles is just something to make you feel like you are doing some good .
Again there is no such thing as break in oil.
1000 miles service when down correct covers a lot of checks. Also and updates are done . Example my 2017 had an ECM programing update that changed Idle speed. It was not a recall item but was done at 1000 mile service.

Good call..... really nothing to gain from a 300 mi oil change.

FYI.... The thought process of changing the oil for storage, involves changing the oil BEFORE you store for the winter. That way, any acids/impurities in the oil won't affect the inside of your engine over the winter months. Store with clean oil, then ride it in the spring until it's time to change again....

Here in SoCal, I haven't had to put a bike in storage for the winter since 1978... but that's how I remember it....

Enjoy the new bike!
