I did my '!7 RGS last week. It took 4 1/2 Qts. for the engine's dip stick to read full hot on the jiffy stand. The oil cooler and lines hold quite a bit. The book says 30 Oz. for the primary (wet fill) and it brought it up above the bottom of the clutch as it should. The book says 28 oz. for the trans. That brought mine to halfway between full and add on the dip stick. I put in the rest of the quart and it is just at the full mark cold on the jiffy stand.

pretty close to my experience, except for the last part...4 oz to go from mid way on the trans dipstick to full? that doesn't sound right..the distance between those two measurements is practically nothing

Well it didn't surprise me. My last bike was an '07 and the book called for 32 oz. I ended up putting in the whole qt. bottle in my '17 and it reads full on the stick. It was at the mid point between add and full with 28 oz. which is perfectly acceptable but I like it up to the top.

The trans is the only one I have to measure out. It takes exactly 28oz to get it right. The primary takes exactly a quart. I put 4 quarts in the engine and that gets me half way up the full marker. Keeping it half way seems to help with keeping the breathers from puking so much oil.

I believe it says to add 3.5 qts and check. Last time I bought oil, I had to buy the whole quart, which was his original question, how much should I buy, I think. I could be wrong.

my owners manual says 4.5 qts initial fill, they updated the On Line Owners manual to say 4.0 initial fill..~ 4.25 gets me 3/4 on the dipstick Hot check

Page 141 of my Owners Manual, Table 30 Initial Oil Fill Quantity 4QTS.

My Twin Cams without an Oil cooler took 3 1/2 Qts. It took 4 1/2 Qts to get mine to the full mark hot. I ran mine about 160 miles at 80+ m.p.h Saturday and nothing blew out the air cleaner. My personal preference is to run the oil level at the full mark. Seems like more oil equals cooler oil, and longer oil life.

The 4.5 quarts initial fill got me for a second. I put 4 in started it up let it run ,level was about right for a cold check.
Primary took 30 OZ.
Trans took 28 OZ.
Changed all 3 the other day leaving on a trip and oil would have come due. Nothing but time on my hands.

Well, just want to thank everyone for the great responses. Executed the oil change this weekend (5000 miles). Used Mobil 1 20w-50 (Primary and engine) and Mobil 1 75-90 for the tranny.
Did the primary first without issue. Then drained the tranny fluid. It started flowing out clean as hell, thought initially I had removed the wrong drain plug.

Anyway, completed the job and went on a 200 mile ride, Natchez trace (Nashville) and stopped off at Puckett's Grocery, Leipers fork. shifting and running is so much smoother now, very distinct difference.
