Road Kings now have a digital tach in the speedo, you gotta cycle through the display to get to it. Im pretty sure theres a gear indicator on it also. They had to put it in there to satisfy the fretters.

personally I don't pay attention to the rpm display much as I pretty much know where it's at by sound and feel..too much time spent diverting your attention 'can' have catastrophic consequences...$h!t happens in the blink of an eye, literally

The shift point is where and when I decided to shift. The tach is useless on my King and there is no nanny shift indicator.

If you're accelerating, probably around 4200. Peak torque is in the upper three's.

But, optimal for what? Acceleration, fuel economy, etc.???

If you're not pinned, you're not getting optimal acceleration at any range.
