For my previous bike I had instructions for pulling the codes from the odometer, and had a laminated sheet with me at all times. Is this even easier on the M8?
Yes, with the bike off, hold the odometer switch down while turning the ignition on, it enters diag mode, and you can switch through each section (ECM, BCM, etc) with the odometer switch. If you get a "Y" with any of them, hold the odometer switch and it will show you the codes.
1:55 in the following video. Its a 2015 in the video, but the process is the same for M8s
with the 2019 gts radio (and i assume 2020) you can get the diagnostic codes to show in the radio display. not sure off hand the process to do that, but i believe it is in the manual.

This is the process to view DTCs on the GTS radio AND reset your service mileage.
Turn ignition off, wait minimum 15 seconds.
Turn ignition to accessory position.
Wait 10 seconds for the WARNING screen to display.
Press and hold the power/mute button untilservice menu is displayed.
