A stage is a system of engine performance improvements specifically designed by Harley Davidson to void your warranty.

I gotta ask, brother...why do you always infer that built bikes aren't reliable? I've personally seen no evidence of that, with the exception of the SE stage 3 & 4 M8 seemingly having a higher degree of sumping issues. Aftermarket builds never seem to have any problems. @mjwebb

I always try and say possibly, or potentially...you definitely have an impressive build as others..but reading here all the time there are countless examples of things going wrong and owners having to spend time messing around with them instead of riding...I think most people looking for a used bike, or car, or whatever, would prefer to buy a one owner stock one with all service and repair receipts, vehicle history, etc..maybe not so much from Toyota but Harleys..well, I would any way

I don't think this is an unreasonable statement

"the further they are taken apart and mucked around with the greater risk of introducing change that could be problematic..especially ones you have no idea what's been done to them"

edit: FWIW although perception is reality so I understand what you are saying but ..."

I commented to TriGeezer's recent post asking for build recommendations with the following which I would do and trust in a heartbeat myself;

"and since Tri Geezer is in So Cal maybe he could PM Steve Cole and see if he's open for business and schedule the upgrade with confidence knowing it would all be done right with the best parts, installation and tuning...sounds like a real win win all around to me"

I guess I don't see what you're seeing. All good, was just curious.

it's all good..I've owned and had high performance builds over the years..my brand new 2007 Softail Custom took me all of 6 months before dumping $10,000 into and the big bore Stage 3 with aftermarket parts and tuned with the old SE Race Tuner Steve Cole designed was very powerful, louder than hell and never had any powertrain problems in the several years I beat on it like a wicked stepchild every time I rode it...but these days with the M8 being such a better running and more powerful engine than the old days just don't feel compelled as much to build them I guess..truth is no matter how good or powerful they make them there's always going to be the demand for more power...I think with age I must be getting more senile too so there's that!
