The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
All of this, however speaks to a new world we're in, and its not always rosy. I'm a technologist by nature and by career, I love technology, but it does have its downside.
Things become obsolete quickly and it's very difficult and costly for companies to maintain compatibility for long periods of time.
A great example is the Sonos wireless audio system. I have 7 zones in my house, so that's a lot of hardware. I began buying their devices in 2006, soon after they launched. The state of the hardware at the time was much less capable than what they're able to make now. They recently announced "end of life" for many of their first and some of their second generation devices. In order to keep adding features to their system so they could stay competitive, they concluded that the older hardware was not capable enough for newer music codecs and new features they wanted to add. So now if you want to be on the new system, all of your hardware needs to be the newer generation. They still support the old system, but no new features, and only bug fixes, and you can't mix old devices with new ones in your system unless you stay on the old software, which means no new features, or manage two separate systems in your home. Not great.
They did offer a 30% discount to replace old devices with new ones, but they are very expensive to begin with, so it cost me many hundreds of dollars to get all my devices to be compatible with the new system. And It wont stop there, I would presume some number of years down the road, I'll be in the same boat again.
