While its not exactly relative to this conversation Indian on the other hand handles things differently than HD. If you bring an Indian Motorcycle to the dealer for service and they connect Digital Wrench if there are any available tune updates based on checksum it automatically initiates a calibration update. This will overwrite whatever tune is in there factory or otherwise. The Indian stuff is a mess in that regard as there can be dozens of different tune compatibilities and checksums for the same year/model bike.
I've got your Fuel Moto tune in my Springfield (thanks Jamie & crew) and my dealer has never overwritten it.
I agree about the checksum hassle though.
Every dollar you spend on aftermarket parts and services is a dollar that Harley doesn't get and Harley wants all those dollars. Why do you think they build so many different models? Why do you think so many of their parts and accessories are model specific? They are doing everything they can to prohibit you from straying too far "off the reservation."
ECM is being replaced with a new one, for 2021...not sure what that means yet...will know on the 19th when MoCo provides Technical Session to discuss changes...
You can bet in the not so distance future selling trading a used bike will be band unless all EPA software and parts are restored.. Not defending Harley on this but EPA took them to the wood shed. And made it clear they would again if HD was not in full compliance.
HD was not just fine for what they did they were fined for what you were doing. get the facts straight.
HD is guilty of some slide of the hand stuff this is not on them but on the EPA and real soon they will be coming on stronger than ever.
There may come a day that you cant trade a modified bike at a dealer or a Dealer can not sell a modified bike.
That said I believe the privater sell will always be able to sell modified bikes. Looks at all the modified cars being sold. Cars with engines that never came in them, insane amounts of power, extreme modifications.
