Default 50,000 mile service

Part of the 50,000 mile service is a front fork inspection. I thought this was a disassemble, inspect, and fluid replacement, but dealer says it is just a fluid replacement. I think the service manual would just say fluid replacement if that was the case. Thoughts and comments appreciated.

My Rushmore and M8 Service Manuals both say the same thing:

"Disassemble, inspect, rebuild, and replace fluid every 50,000 miles".

Key word here is "rebuild"

To me, this indicates that I buy the rebuild kit located in the HD parts manual, which apparently includes seals.

Mine is coming up, bike now passing 44k miles. I'm also going to replace the springs in my stock bike's forks. They get weak over time and tend to sag. On most previous bikes I've owned, I've always replaced the fork springs whenever I rebuild forks for any reason. They're fairly cheap, and really spruce up the front end.

Krusty
That is my thinking also, and I like the recommendation to replace springs. got any idea of cost of replacement stock springs?

Ronnies has them for $29 each for the two long springs, and $9 each for the two short rebound springs. One each for each fork. That's for my 2018 RGU.

The fork rebuild kit is $34, you need one kit for each fork. I think the kit has all the small bits you'd need.

I'm sure there are aftermarket springs available that would change the way the front end acts. I usually replaced oem springs on Japanese bikes with Progressive, and could really tell the difference. With this RGU I'm happy with the stock forks, and also happy with the very reasonable prices for new springs.

I need to make a jig for compressing the cap down to the fork tube. No way to do that by hand anymore.

Yep, I have only 7000 miles to go before I need that service on my 19 Road Glide. That will be this summer.

I have no plans of servicing either the forks or head bearings until they fail. My old bike had drain screws for the forks and grease fittings for the steering head bearings. If Harley expected me to maintain the forks and head bearings, they would have provided that on this bike. Since they didn't, and rebuilding/replacing will cost little more than servicing (most of the cost is labor), I see no point in doing this until necessary.

I'd disassemble and install Legends and while your in there, do the rear. Makes the M8 so much better/
