Trying to dodge snowflakes and put the first 1000 miles on the Street Glide before spring. I''ve decided to have the dealer do the 1000 mile service just to assure myself that the bike will have no issues. What should I expect from the service dept as far as what they will check and what they will change. ie ( oils an the such). They are charging $328.00 for the service.

If your lucky enough to have a Dealer who will do it right, it's not a bad idea to have them do the 1K mile service. You might get them to do what I did with my Dealer on my wifes 2010 SG Trike. I made a deal that I would change the fluids and they do the rest. They only charged 133.00 to check everything. Be sure they check the front fork bearing assy. My wifes worked loose because it was never torqued properly. I don't know what year they did it, but The MoCo changed the locking nut design. If it's done properly, it's ok, But I'd rather have a locking washer that has the tab you bend up, or a pin through it.
look in your owners manual. it will show what is supposed to be checked at each service interval.
and i'm not being a smartass here, i just don't have one handy to tell you. but its mostly fluid changes, visual inspections, a couple of adjustments, and check of all critical fasteners.....
change oil and filter, clean magnetic drain plug
change primary chain case fluid, clean magnetic drain plug
change transmission lubricant, clean magnetic drain plug
check and adjust primary drive chain
inspect air cleaner
lubricate the following
front brake lever,throttle cables,throttle
clutch control cable and lever, jiffy stand
tighten battery connections, check electrolyte on wet cells
test battery voltage & charging system output
check lighting & horn for proper operation
adjust and check clutch/cable free play
inspect engine stabilizers and mounts
inspect fuel valve, lines and fittings for leaks
inspect tires, tread depth & adjust pressure
check wheels & tighten spokes
inspect brake pads and disc for wear
adjust and check rear belt
check shock absorbers
inspect oil and brake lines and fittings for leaks
inspect brake fluid level and condition
check engine idle speed
check operation of throttle and enricher
check front fork bearing adjustment
road test
Thanks for the quick response, EVILTWIN - If they check all of that as they should and give me a thumbs up I should feel pretty good about trouble free long distance riding. Will keep my fingers crossed that they do more then pencil whip the service check, The local service dept here has treated me pretty fairly so far.
I guess thee has to be a certain level of trust that they will do what they are supposed to do. I'll be bringing my RK in sometime in th spring for the 1000 mile check and fluid change. I'm hoping they don't pencil whip as well
This time of year the service department is usually pretty slow which means they have the time to do a thorough job and not just rush your bike out of the way of the next one.
No preachin' here - just a thought:
I've found that most (if not all) first time new HD owners have their dealer do their 1K service just as you're going to. Nothing wrong with that and I did the same with my first new scoot. I was too apprehensive and wanted to avoid any possible warranty issues that might arise (but never did).
After that I've never taken a bike back to the dealer after purchase unless it was for warranty work. Many forum members also do their own service work (and more). I should also add that I've ridden, raced and serviced my own bikes since my first minibike at age 10. Couldn't afford to do anything else on paper route wages. It took quite awhile to save up for that minibike, that's for sure.
The 1K service is something you can easily do yourself if you have some tools and basic mechanical ability and it'll let you get up close and personal with your scoot. All the details are listed in the shop manual for your bike. If you get over your head you can always put 'er back together take it to the dealer.
Hey Soulpony, You should have the dealer do the 1000 mile service. My owner's manual tells me to have the dealer do the first "inspection and service prior to the first 1000 miles", in order to keep my "limited warranty valid".
BTW the manual doesn't say the "dealer technician" has to do any of the other maintenance services after that. So you do the service from then on, buy a service manual ,and you'll ride better and happier knowing the maintenance was done correctly.
