Silly question perhaps, but.....mostly highways or two lane roads?

To do the 37 states in my limited time off work (missed only 4 days), I did lots of federal interstates. State roads have been probably 40% of the 25k (now almost 27k). If I can go somewhere without using the federal interstate system, then the two or four lane state roads are preferred.
