2017 FLHTK TPMS Retrofit
I have the GTS. I used the CVO TPMS sensors. I initially ordered them from our favorite online discount Harley dealer but after waiting a couple weeks, I got a message they were on back order. I went to my local dealer and paid retail plus tax minus 10%. Around $180. I also ordered the FOBO t-valves for the gaskets that some have said are needed for stock rims with 11.3mm valve stems. What I didn't realize, when you order from FOBO, they come from Malaysia (ordered July 22, received 9 Aug). I couldn't find them anywhere else online that sold them except Wingding or something like that but they cost about $10 more (not sure if they stock them though). But nonetheless, they're not needed. I can break down my tires myself so I experimented.
The Valve on the left is a cheap-o from amazon (11.3 mm) and the one on the right is the TPMS valve. If you look at the the base that goes into the rim, they're basically the same size.
This is the 11.3 mm, it takes up most of the space in the rim.
This is the TPMS (8.3 MM) in the rim. The gasket sits flush in the hole. I installed the sensor, put the tire on, aired it up, and no leaks. The TPMS sensor screws on clamps it tight and seals it. If you want, you can opt to use the the FOBO gaskets (I did because I ordered them) and it will go over the valve stem and take up that space. It does make it a PITA getting the sensor screwed on though.
After installing, I took the bike to HD and the tech did his thing ($58). It was his first time but he figured it out. He made me real nervous at first because he said if he flashes the ECM it would lock it or something like that. (not sure where the ECM comes in to play with this process of changing the BCM and Radio customization) I didn't see what he was seeing but it all worked out. If anyone decides to do this, I highly recommend going to the dealer and talk to them to make sure they are willing to do it. Apparently there are alternatives to the Digitech but I can't speak on it.
I don't have an icon in my gauges nor will the air pressure show in the odometer. I'm pretty sure I'll get the pop up if the air pressure is low similar to the low fuel message.
It was a cool little project.
