Very few people will pay $150 for a 2 year old map I know I'm not. I'll just use my Garmin that has free updates four times a year for long trips in unfamiliar places.
Why can they not make all the mapping systems work like a Google map. Updates are automatic. Our phones, tablets and computers all work, other then they may have a wrong location for some addresses. Like mine took people N of I-94 instead of south, but I sent a message to Google and they fixed that. Plus you can put in a lat/long to route as well. Our service vehicles use Google Earth Pro (which is free now) and we can route down oil roads, prairie trails, pasture routes, just about anywhere there are tire tracks on the maps.
It's a good idea but know that you would not be carrying the actual maps with you. Your data connection would. So all bikes would need a data plan. Not a problem usually but just saying.
Has anyone tested creating maps on the Garmin and importing into the Doomed (not Boomed)Info System? Of course here in ND it will be a while for my testing to resume.
Bluetooth off your Smart Phone would work for bike for maps to bike. Just as I do for laptops in vehicles, since we work in areas that have no service for many hours while moving from one location to another all day long. It still tracks, but new maps come when connection comes available.
The Maps on Navi are now Jan 2017 Q1 I am about to download them they should post a simple user guide took me about 30 minutes to figure out you have to export a fingerprint to the USB first before you can start the download.. but all seems good now..

What is the actual map date though? Are they still 2 years behind?
I heard this was a little difficult with the fingerprint thing. What was the deal with that. I am guessing its so you dont get a copy and send it too all your friends. One copy one bike deal...? How does that work.

It's fingerprinted. You have to download a file from the radio and then plug it into the software which then gives you the file exclusive to your radio. It is not difficult to do. But I will say it doesn't work with Mac so you have to use Windows.
the only info I can find about free updates is for CVO bikes. I just got my 15 LTD 2 months ago and it would be nice if the upsate was free but I am not holding my breath
