About a month ago I noticed what I thought was some dirt specs on the upper back left section of my gas tank. Went to clean it & low & behold it wasn't dirt but chips in the paint. I know nothing hit the tank so I took it to my local dealer & talked to the service manager. He said since he wasn't an expert on paint for me to take it to the local painter that they do business with for an evaluation. So I did & he said the paint was coming loose from the bottom of the tank & it was a defect. He told the service manager that.
BTW the warranty ran out in Aug. I do have ESP but it does not cover cosmetic issues which this is. So he called H-D & explained the situation & they said we will take care of the customer & sent you a new tank. No photos required no questions. Service manager was a little shocked that it was easy to get them to do that. Found out H-D told him they had a few of theses issues happening. The next surprise was that the tank was delivered in one week. Didn't have to wait 6-9 weeks. Must have hit the right painting schedule I guess. Bottom line new tank installed & wasn't charged for tank or for the labor. Cannot complain about that.
wow ! icouldn't get them to replace a tank on my heritage when the decal was sticking out from under the paint. they said i may have buffed it, yea right, on a new bike. i really lost faith in the factory at that point and will never take my bike to the dealer for anything if i don't have to. every warrenty issue i've ever had has been like pulling teeth.
One month after buying my limited I was washing it and a tiny bubble of paint came off the top of my front fender. It was in the clear coat I couldn't see it but I could feel it when it came off. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a road chip. It did look like a road chip but I couldn't prove that it wasn't. I told them it was defective paint and I would be back. Another month past and as I was washing the bike I saw another bubble but this time it was in the black paint and I made sure I didn't touch it. Rode to the dealer and they called MOCO and with in 4 weeks I got a new front fender.
So they have had issues with paint. If any of you see what appears to be a road chip start paying close attention for bubbles in the paint. You have to look close.
I've been on Harleys since the AMF days and have always been happy with the customer service from my dealer. I've found that a good dealer will present your problem to the MoCo in a way that increases your odds of a good result. If you're always having difficulty getting problems resolved, I'd suggest finding another dealer.
