anyone have one of these new style tethers break( the flat ones) on them yet ? thinking about adding a back up cable or para cord to the lid. maybe HD has got it figured out this time.
I added a brass folded chain backup. On our long trips we strap a fairly heavy waterproof bag on the lid rack, and although we never let the full weight of it on the hinges or tether, you can't be too careful. It's just quicker to get in there than taking the bag off.
You can see it on the right side of this pic I took of some lights I added in there. It's on a trike, but shouldn't be any different.

I haven't had anything happen to the tether on my Limited, but I'm very aware of how heavy the Tourpack's lid is and I open it very carefully so as to not stress the tether device.
I don't recall any complaints on the current version of this device, but I do recall reading complaints about the previous one.
I don't intend to install any backup cord or chain, I think just being mindful of the lid will be fine. My risk if something goes awry.
I'm more concerned with a big wind or the wife not supporting the bag when it's on there, I probably should reinforce the hinges with some JB Weld, too.
I had the chain laying around, and just used some #10 stainless flat head bolts, nuts and one fender washer on each side of each hole. I put a couple of layers of black electrician's tape on the inside surface of the fender washers so they wouldn't dig in to the plastic.. The bolts just fit lengthwise and don't stick out of the nuts. I drilled the holes where shown; there's almost a half inch gap between the backrest and the lid where the upper one goes, and likewise maybe a full 3/8" where the lower one is, so no issues with clearance or interference or anything. Blue Loctite on both. I made the chain length so it gets tight right at about where the tether is fully extended and pushed just a little bit. The chain falls nicely into place when closing it, never had it interfere or get caught on anything so far after 6 months or so. It was an easy, cheap, fun and potentially useful mod, why not?

I did notice on the new Ultra that if you dont hold the trunk lid it will kind of bounce on the hinges even without a bag on the rack. So what does the front side of the trunk lid and trunk look like. Is is just a nut and bold ?
