Sturgis SD report
Great roads, lots of nice scenery (both Mother Nature's & scantily clad hotties) great atmosphere, welcoming locals, huge wild bars, unbelievable entertainment, and did I mention great roads. Did 1000 miles in 4 days of riding. Explored almost all of the Black Hills & part of Wyoming. It offers everything you could want. Tight twisties thru canyons, mountain roads, cruising rural roads & WFO stretches. Had one section in Wyoming where speed was triple digits for 20 minutes.
As far as sites- saw Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Devils Tower, Needles Eye & a bunch of hotties downtown Sturgis.
Roads-16A, also called Iron Mountain Road, traversed the side of a mountain. What was really wild were these tunnels that looked chiseled thru the rock and were about 13' wide, 12' high and about 50' long. While the tunnel itself was cool, the view thru the tunnel was unbelievable. As you approached the tunnel, looking thru you would see Mt Rushmore perfectly framed about 10 miles away.
Spearfish Canyon-Winding 2 lane thru the center of a canyon. Limestone cliffs a few hundred feet high on both sides of the road. Basically ride right up the spine of the canyon.
Needles Highway- Nice cruiser with great views, tunnels. There is a 9' wide tunnel at Needles eye.
I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. Some other notables-385 cuts right thru the Black Hills, Nemo road was real nice, and 585 south of Sundance was awesome.
The locals absolutely love the Rally. There are "Welcome Bikers" signs everywhere. All the top vendors and some of the wildest bars you'll ever see. Full Throttle Saloon encourages you to ride your bike into the bar and then you will get cheered into doing a burnout-IN THE BAR! From an entertainment perspective, it had it all and big names too. ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker, Kiss, Saliva, Kenny Chesney, Larry the Cable Guy, etc. etc.
All in all, I will go back....OFTEN! It was an unbelievable experience and was worth the 1859 mile drive out there.
