i have an 07 dyna with the new 6 speed and would like to know what kind of oil people have been running in them. I have read to run gear oil but some have said that the new 6 speeds are a whole new animal and don't know what to run yet. I have read the manual and would just like to know what others out there are using instead of the "HD recomended, stealer only oil".
I have a Harley Master Tech. that services my Harley and a lot of the New 07's. He uses the AMSOIL SVG 75/90. The AMSOIL 20/50 will work just fine also as will the Mobile Motorcycle products.
I have also been doing a lot of reading on this forum and liked what I was hearing with folks using Redline Shockproof heavy in their tranny and Redline MTL in the primary...
However, I got a TON of flack from my dealer when I brought my own bottles of this stuff - they gave me the same spiel: 6 speed tranny, new beast, blah blah
I ended up with the shockproof heavy in the tranny but got talked out of the MTL in the primary because it's "gear oil" and they "just don't understand why you would want to put it there".
I'm still kind of sore that I let myself get talked out of it, to tell ya the truth. All I can say is they must make ONE HELLUVA kickback on that damn syn3, they were pushin that stuff on me like a crack cake filled with yummy heroin bits and smothered with a delicious nicotine sauce...
I run the MTL in my primary......it is a GL4 thin gear oil and has no friction modifier to cause the clutch to slip. Pours like a 5w30 motor oil and is good for the bearings. That said, syn3 has no moly either. Both are fine. The big issue is GL5 gear oil in the trans. I run the Shockproof Heavy in my trans......if my dealer doesn't like it.....I'll find another dealer. Any of the 75w90 or higher GL5 gear oils are fine for the trans. Much better than the motor oil IMO.
Change your own oil......you won't hear the flak.
BTW.....my dealer sells BelRay 85w140 gear saver oil for your trans if you don't like syn3.
I just put in 75w/140 mobil 1 gear oil in the transmission and took it for a ride. There was a huge difference in the sounds that were comming from the unit. 5th gear, what wine, none there, very smooth going thou the gears and nutural went it just like that
I'll keep it
