Just switched to Redline in primary & transmission couple weeks ago when I did my 10k service. Very pleased.

Most of the gear clunk in a Harley is ftom the primary chain being too tight- whatever method is used to tension it. And cold/too thick oil in the primary. Make sure you have enough clutch in there too (pleanty of release) Redline Shockproof works great. I do admit I flush my tyranny with 20-50 every time I change it to flush all particals though. Just call me nuts!! Ride it about 20 miles that way and it still comes out looking like Shockproof

Redline all-around 1000 miles ago at the 10K service and all is OK. I do believe the Primary is a noisier but I think it's because the RL is thinner and I am hearing the chain a bit more. I figure ride more and worry less!!

In your opinion what part makes the noise?
Trans main shaft is spinning, shift into 1st and bang (metal to metal sound). I am guessing shifting fork.

The gears are constant mesh. The dogs on the gears ingage them to the shafts. That's where the noise comes from. It may shake the shift forks a little too.

A little slack in the primary chain dampens the blow. Slightly raising the top of the chain when putting it in gear has a dampining effect. It's heavy. Quite a bit of drag from the oil between the clutch plates.

If the main shaft is spinning so is the counter shaft since the gears are always engaged.

Stopping all 10 gears (in a five speed) you would get sound from all the clearances in all five sets of gears when they stop plus the sound of the dogs engaging into the first gear set.

IMO, if it didn't clunk it would be Honda. I use Redline in crankcase and gearbox and use Valvoline 10w-40 regular oil in the primary with zero problems.

Cool Noisy Oil !!!

I have gone 200 miles and I must say "WHAT A TOTAL WAIST OF MONEY". Transmission is still loud as ever and did not notice any difference in locating neutral. Clunk, Clunk, Clunk. Everyone praised this stuff as being the answer to all our shifting problems. Very disappointing.
Being in the deep south like you are ....drop the transmission oil and refill with 1/2 qt 85w140 Valoline gear oil and 1/2 qt of the Lucas Heavy Duty oil stabilizer.(read the back of the bottle )...( Helps control heat and noise in High Performance motorcyles..especially Harley Davidson )
then add a qt 85w140 Valoline gear oil to the primary (no lucas in there ,will make the clutch slip) ...give it a few miles to work between all the gears ....you should add a qt of the Lucas to the motor oil also ...you will find that everything will quiet down some ..and seem to run a little cooler ...in the heat we have down here ...we need alot heavier oil to start out with ...then add 300 degree's to it and that **** that pours like water at 40 degrees will not do much to quiet things down ...in the summer we run the straight 50 weight and still add at least 1 qt of Lucas to the motor ..!!!
think of it like this ...the rear end in your pick up truck is gears and ball bearings at each wheel ...would you put that same thin oil in the rear end of your truck ...the transmission in your bike is the same thing ...gears and ball bearings !!

...contrary to popular belief ...these are not very precision made motors...there are alot of gaps ,chains, sliders ..etc..in them that need a heavy oil to take up all the spaces!!! ...Like the old saying .."try it, you'll like it " ...

be sure to adjust the clutch as per the manual also !!! that will make finding neutral much ez'er !!
