Lost my cam chain tensioner which tore up my bottom end. Since the motor was put back together I have rode about 2000 miles and had to put 2 qts of oil in the motor! Long story short; I talked to my indy wrench who put my motor together. He said "give it a couple more thousand miles and see what happens"? All I did to the motor was replace the stock crank/flywheel with same and put S&S 585G cams in it. The rings were also replaced so he thought the rings might still be adjusting?? I normally never used oil between oil changes. The motor doesn't smoke or anything and is running good. What do you all think?? THX!
That much oil has to be going somewhere. How do the plugs look? Is it showing any signs of leaking or mixing with the primary?
My 06 seemed to use a qt. in the first 1000 miles BUT I made the mistake of assuming it was filled to begin with. The second thousand it used much, much less and now uses nothing noticable since about 2500 miles. At 13K I am confident it is broken in and "cured" but my 04 WG never used a drop from the very first change to about 20K miles.
2qts. in 2K is definitely a bit of a concern, IMHO, unless it is creating lots of blowby and a puddle under the AC or on your right leg. If thats the case, first place would be to check the alignment of the oil pump IF the plugs look good and the exhaust isn't smoky or oily looking.
thanks for the reply EZ. I didn't even check the oil when I picked up the bike after the rebuild. I assumed that a mechanic rebuilding a motor should know that a bagger takes 4 qts? never assume right?! So I did about 700 mile break in, had it dynoed....checked it when I got home and it was a full quart low. I called the shop and told the owner that sparky needs to check the oil level when he puts a motor back togther, never even thinking that it could haveburned a qt in 800 miles?! So I'll keep an eye on it and hopefully it stops after another 2K?
