It doesn't actually matter how much it holds - simply fill it up to the approved level - info also in that manual. Don't simply pour in a set quantity, fill to the mark!
Hello, can anyone tell me off hand how much oil a Sportster 48 holds when dry.
Thanks
The manual tells you how much the oil tank holds and filter holds or that will be required on an oil change as opposed to specifically your question when dry.
There is about 1/2 quart left in the engine that doesn't come out when you drain the oil.
The procedure is to put 2 quarts of oil in and start the engine. After a short run check the level and top as required. In effect saying the amount is what is required not a specific amount.
So in summary if you start with a brand new engine you would purchase 4 quarts. If you are doing an oil change you will need to purchase at least 3 quarts.
