I changed the oil in my 03 Fatty last weekend.
Using my best mech logic it turns out i drained the crankcase, later i found that the drain on the oil tank.
So now my crankcase is empty and my oil tank is full.
Reading so other posts it sounds like this is not really a problem, i can start and go because the engine is a dry sump (no or not much oil stored in the crankcase)
Can someone confirm this or correct me?
The drain for the tank is on the right side on the right rear of the tank. There is a rubber tube that runs down to a plug. Remove the plug to drain the tank. I haven't looked yet, but is there a drain plug to drain the crank? Most guys talk about removing the oil return line and running the bike to evacuate the crankcase, with a full tank of oil, of course. I would think it would be easier to drain out of a plug if one was there.
But, yes, to answer your question, you don't need any oil in the crankcase to start the bike as long as the tank is full.
