Default First time changing all fluids need some advice

Im about to attempt to change all the fluids in my street bob. This is the first time i have changed the oil in a motorcycle. What kind of oil should i get for the transmission and primary, transmission. Can i use the same oil in all of them. What weight? I did a search and seems like everybody had a different answer on the wieght of oil. I was gonna go with mobil 1. also i know i need a filter what about a gasket for the inspection door?

If you use a HD syn 3 you can use it in all 3 holes. There are many post on which oil is best for what hole. Do a search and you will have days of reading.

Mobil 1 V-Twin is good, I have been using it for awhile....Filter, just been using the HD filter, chrome or black. It is a good idea to change your inspection cover gasket or, you'll see alittle leak. I have always used the HD primary and tranny lube...No probs.

Well, you said you wanted advice so.........................

DON'T use syn III in all three holes. Use a good Oil like Mobile ONE, Redline, Amsoil or the like for the engine.

Use a good gear oil for the tranny, like Redline HD Shockproof or Amsoil gear oil or Mobile One Gear Oil.

Use either a plain Dino 10/30 in the primary and change it at least every 5K. Anything you use here will collect clutch dust and crap so drain it more than less often. You could also use Type F Auto trans fluid here or Redline MTL. The advantage of those is they have NO friction modifiers and are good for the clutch. YOU DON'T NEED heavy or gear oil in the primary!

That is MY advice. Syn III is expensive , semi syn and is made by Citgo which has ties to Venezuela. NOT our friends!

EZ

Assuming you're somewhere in the USA and have a fairly modern bike (where you are & what you have is good info to have in your sig or profile) we'll go with a generic answer. From there it can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it.

As mentioned, you can use Syn3 (or any good quality 20W-50) in all three holes, but whether you choose to do that is up to you. I would use a good oil (Mobil 1, Redline, Syn 3, etc.) in the engine, an H-D filter, and H-D Formula+ in the tranny and primary per H-D's recommendation. We have an '07 Softail and an '07 Sportster- both have Formula+ in the tranny & primary and run well on it. No tranny noises, smooth shifting, and good clutch operation.
As mentioned you can also put gear oil in the tranny, but again, whether you choose to do this or not is up to you.

The large round clutch inspection (derby) cover o-ring may or may not need replacement depending on how old it is. If it's an '06-'07 you probably won't have to. Just be sure to wipe off the cover & mating surface before putting the cover back on to avoid future drips from residual oil.
Last, buy new o-rings for the engine, tranny, & primary drain plugs from your dealer. They're cheap and will likely need replacement.
