Default RE: oil spraying

fl_799, I have followed capacities the owners manual stated. This last time when adding a lil oil,
I made sure of the amount of oil in tank b-4 addin ne too it. So about starting over??? Are you sayin that maybe the idea about the Syn3 oil I changed too might also be the problem? Or that just goin back to ne non-Syn type motorcycle oil would be a better solution, regradless if it's HD360 or Mobil?

:edit: My first post stated that after the ride thrusday nite, when the oil started blowin again that by the time I got back home it had blown almost all the oil out of my tank. It was about 1 inch of oil in bottom of the tank b-4 adding 1 1/2 qts yesterday, which brought the level to the bottom point of my dipstick.

If you are blowing nearly all the oil out on a ride, you have a problem that has nothing to do with the type of oil, or the anount of oil. If there is an obstruction or some other reason (return side of oil pump crapped out) the oil isn't properly returning to the oil tank from the engine, the crankcase sump will fill up, and the oil will blow out the breathers. That's where I'd start looking.

Type of oil issue - I changed an '87 Evo to Mobil 1 15w-50 at about 40k miles. There were no problems. While I think the Syn 3 is overpriced (HD tax, of course), it isn't a bad oil, and has nothing in it that would cause a motor to suddenly start blowing oil out compared to another type of oil of the same viscosity.

I am thinking along with pococj.a change of oil type may cause some carryover [misting] but not to the point of draining all your oil. You need to remove the return oil line from oil tank and verify oil is being pumped out. There are many reasons why carryover happens and a product I use the control this is a Krank Vent Plus which controlls the amount of air being returned to the crankcase when the pistons are rising. This is not a fix for your problem and if you can't find the cause yourself have it look at by a shop.

ORIGINAL: bye2u

well KBFXDLI, I guess it did the job for them... I tryed another ave to apporch this problem.
Cleaned the K & N air filter with there filter cleaning solution and didn't oil it. Check oil level in tank, from the nite b-4 ride. Level in tank was 1 inch in the bottom of tank...added 1 1/2 qts
to bring level to just touching drip stick. Let bike warm-up about 10 to 15 mins and guess what happen??? Yes it started to leak out the breather again... [sm=WTFsgign.gif]

Now tonite I called a friend who is a Ace Mechanic (should of called him sooner ). First thing
he told me was not pleasant to my ears...get rid of the Syn3 oil!!! and clean the system out with 2 oil changes of H-D 360 20W50, flush system with first change while hot and do the second change and it should stop the blow back because with the evo havin over 25,000 miles and it start to act like that with Syn3 that the motor wasn't use to the new form of oil. Kind of make scents to me some what. [sm=yikesomg.gif]
I agree with Skip.....it's not the type of oil. If you have reduced your oil level by 1/2 qt then you probably have some obstruction preventing the oil from getting back to the tank. I'd check the oil lines first. Then the oil pump. I think the pump on your motor is the older design geroter that could be blocked up or simply worn and failing. BTW, Have you changed the type of oil filter you are using?

Thanks guys for ur help, problem solved..I hope , Checked the oil lines and they all
operated great. Did change oil back to 20/w50, but still have syn3 mixed with 360.
The filter is the same as the replaced filter from Harley. part number 63796-77A
goin to run oil for about 50 to 100 miles than flush with another oil change & filter.
btw, goin to leave syn3 in prime & tranny a lil longer to see how it does. also is there
another way to help drain oil directy from the motor other than the line from oil tank.
To make sure I remove all the oil next time. The owners manual does show both a drain
line and a plug. [sm=thanx.gif]

Just drain the oil from the tank. There isn't enough to worry about still in the motor. But if you want to get it all out, change the oil as normal, then pull the return line to the tank, crank the engine over until clean oil comes out the return hose, stop the engine, reconnect the return line, clean up the mess you just made, go ridin', check the oil when you get home, top off as desired.
