99 Heritage Springer.....179000 miles and still running strong....Amsoil 20/50 only oil ever used.....say what you want, Syn oil is THE ONLY oil I use in everything I own. enough said
1st off...WOW! This post must have set some kind of record! Looks like oil is a very big subject to alot of us. I'm not a trubologist..and I don't play one on TV, but I have 25 years of military maintenance experience, and 2 years as a maintenance planner in a borax reinery. It's the latter (and admitedly lesser) experiencethat I draw on for this reply:
We run synthetics in all of our gearboxes (reducers), and have trended maintenance costs from the "old days" when we used conventional oils...without a doubt, synthetic oil gives us longer service life. Recnetly i found mydelf in a situation where I had to install a gearbox rated for a 150 HP motor in an aplication where it was to be powered by a 200HP motor. Prior to installing the $8,000 gearbox I contacted the manufacturer rep, and was told they would only warranty the gearbox if we used fully synthetic lube. If synthetic is good enough for a gearbox...being overpowered 30%...running 24hours a day, 7 days a week...in the heart of the mojave desert...it's good enough for my twincam.
I run mobil1, and am very satisfied with it. I would probably have tried amsoil by now (have heard nothing but good reviews on it) if it wasn't so dawg gone hard to git!
