05 Heritage Softail, Anyone know where the level should be on the dipstick when the bike is cold??? I know the 05's have a swivel dipstick and your supposed to check it on the side stand, the manual says to run to operating temp, let idle a minute or two, shut down and check the level. I was just wondering what the level should be when it's cold??? Seems like the level is low to me and I don't want to put too much oil in. It has me wondering if it is using oil or the mechanic didn't put enough in at the 1k checkup?? Bike onlly has 2100 miles on her, do they use any oil during the breakin???
I would only check it when its hot like the manual says.
There is a check valve for the oil tank and they leak down sometimes when the bike sits for a while.
When you start the bike the oil that leaked down in the engine gets pumped back up in the tank.
It circulates the oil from tank to motor and back again.
Not all bikes leak down and it is harmless if it does but if your bike is one that does you will get a inaccurate measurement if you check the oil without the oil being hot.
I've noticed this on my 05 fatboy. When cold after having run the bike it's half way between the add and full mark. Leaving the bike for a week, the oil drops to below the add/safe mark[:@]
I have wondered if the oil that has drained from the tank could do some damage when starting up the engine, ie. too much oil pressure or something? Is there an easy fix to stop this happening?
