Porcshe owners "Air Cooled" engines soon discovered that after the introduction of Catalytic Converters some of the elements in the oil that aided in reducing friction stopped up or caused the converters to fail.
Harley has now introduced catalytic converters to most of the 2010 models along with the Cali and CVO bikes.
We need the synthetics because the EPA has leaned the Harley's out so much they run hotter than the pre EFI bikes. The synthetics have the ingredients to coat and lubricate moving parts and not break down from the heat until we get over 300 deg. F.
How will the cats effect our SYN3, Mobil 1, and AMSOIL, will the formula's have to change because of the cats? Will they have substitute ingredients that lube as well and not break down from the heat but still not damage the Cats?
Is this even something we need to be concerned about? Harley's do run hotter than the air cooled Porcshe engines and some of us are worried about extended engine life?
Good point and you are correct. I think the ZDDP in oils kills the cats. I think HD will end up making water cooled bikes to control the engine temperature in the end.
The problem with the lowered level of ZDDP is with flat tappet wear, that is why all the auto manufacturers changed over to roller lifters in the mid 90`s.
Harleys do not have flat tappet lifters, they have roller lifters, so ZDDP is not needed.
ZDDP is the stuff that is bad for cats (My `89 does not have a cat...).
