Default oil amount?

I order my service manual for my 08 street bob, but I could not wait for it to do some of the oil changes. I went to my HD dealer and ask how much oil will it take to do my motorcycle. I was told 1 quart for the transmission, 1 1/16 quarts on the primary chain case, and 4 quarts for the motor oil for a total of 6 1/16. transmission and primary case amounts seem to be right , but when I change my motor oil after the third quart it started overflowing. So, I drain some oil out of the motor.. what is the right amount. Ihave read some earlier posts and they say as high as 3 1/2 quarts and as low as 2 1/2; which one is the correct amount? the help would be greatly appreciated

That info is in your owners manual. For a touring I know it is 4 quarts.

went ahead and drain the new oil and added another new filter and adde 2 1/2 quarts and what ever the amount the filter holds, and run the bike for about 10 miles(20 minutes) and the oil lever was just perfect. So technically it was 2 3/4 does that sound about right?

Should be right. My Dyna takes:

Engine: Dry (disassembled) 3.0qts. Wet: 2.5 qts.
Trans: 1 qt
Primary: 1 qt.
