Question Another oil change question..

I have a 2009 FLHTC
I did my 1K service my self and only did the regular Harley oil and formula+ in primary and transmission...

Im at 3600 miles now so was going to change the oil and now debating on doing the SYN3 in the motor...

If I put that in motor is that good for 5k miles or 1yr since I dont ride that much

And should I just do the primary and trans at the same time?

for primary and trans is the formula+ or SYN3 better to use?

Try some 75w90 or 75w140 synthetic gear lube in your trans. Like Mobil1 or Valvoline. It will shift much better, run quieter and you can run it 20,000 miles. In the engine & primary the syn3 20w50 is fine or the Mobil1Vtwin 20w50 is actually a bit better. If you just like to get all your oil & filters at the dealer ask if they carry Bel Ray 85w140 gear saver for your trans. Many dealers do. But use gear oil in the trans.

that works...so I think I will put my gear oil in tranny then use the SYN3 in motor and primary...

So can the Syn3 make it 5k miles?
some people seem to still change it at 2500 miles

If you talk to the oil experts, you will find that synthetic oil is not good for 5,000 miles. Just because you're using synthetic, don't mean you shouldn't should change at regular interval as you would with standard engine oils. Especially in an air cooled engine.

FWIW, if you're doing short trips to get those miles, a more frequent oil change might be better.

Short trips generally won't allow the oil to fully heat and burn off raw fuel or water vapor...both bad for a motor.
