Question Baisley Spring

Thinking about installing a Baisley Spring to reduce top end noise. Any down sides to this? Thanks

I installed the spring in my Ultra about 6 months ago when i did a cam upgrade. I have not experianced any ill effects from it at all. Oil pressure runs 38-40 psi running on open road and 5-8 psi when idling. All when engine is normal operating temp 180-200. I have an oil cooler.

My spring has been in for two years. No issues. Pressure is good and no oil leaks.

Could be...If there is top end noise there may be a reason. Worn lifter blocks, worn rocker shaft bushings, weak/bad lifter.

The Baisley spring holds the pressure regulating valve down until a higher pressure is reached, and until that pressure is reached and the regulating valve lifts, the lower end of the engine is not supplied with oil.

Book says that over 32 lbs is returned to the input of the pump. It doesn't divert from the bottom to the top like Dan89FLSTC implies,

I have wondered why the MOCO didn't do this years ago if it was such an easy "fix".

Book also says that the baffle in the oil tank is there to slow down the flow for cooling. I am thinking that just like walking on a bed of hot coals, barefoot, the heat transfers when you stop moving. In other words, for heat transfers from oil to a cooling surface better with a slower flow.

Just a thought.

I don`t know what book you are reading from, and I did not imply that oil is diverted from the bottom end to the top, you need to go back and read my post...

I stated a fact...

Quoting from the book (EVO):

The pressure created in the top end oil system causes oil pressure regulating valve to open. Oil is then allowed to travel thru oil pump passage into a crankcase passage and thru cam gear cover passage, lubricating pinion shaft bushing and lower connecting rod bearings.

Like I said, the oil pressure in the top end must reach a certain level, before the oil is allowed to go to the bottom end.

It looks like every one of the posters that replied is talking about using a Baisley spring in a TC engine, when the op is asking about an EVO engine. Or maybe I was just thrown off by his nickname 92 EVO...

Dan you are right.
The thing though is it just takes an instant for the oil pressure to push the relief open. Roller and ball bearings should do fine.

Agreed, I was just suggesting that the op should know what is causing the clatter, if the normal system oil pressure is not enough, then there is a problem elsewhere.
