Thanks Skip for the good info about oil.
I am the owner of a 2003 883 Sportster.
My question is : What type of oil do you recommand for the primary chaincase of a Sportster ?
I'm not familiar with the newer Sporty tranny/primary setups. I know the old ones shared the transmission and primary oil, plus there was some interchange between the engine and primary. What does the owner's manual call for? Knowing that, someone on here might be able to come up with something.
Sorry I can't be of more help. Guess we'll both get to learn something on this one!
Of course the HD manuel says to use Sport trans fluid - HD genuine.
But the bottle says nothing to what is inside .
When i change it tough it smells like Automatic trans. oil
Amsoil recommand their 20w50 synthetic.
Another guy recommand 75w90 gear oil. So i am a bit confuse ??
You should be OK running the Amsoil 20W-50 but don't run gear oil. If you aren't sure, ask the shop guy at your HD shop if he would run HD Syn3 in the primary. If he says yes, then run Amsoil or Mobil 1.
I changed to Amsoil 20W-50 on my last oil change. I'm running it in my engine and primary. I have over 500 miles since I changed to total Amsoil, with no problems. I have noticed the oil temps are about 10 degrees cooler. I ain't goin back to Dino oil!
